All Creatures, Great and Small
By Carl R. Merritt
The advance scout was in new territory. He had no idea what lay ahead. He knew he could find his way back to his army of thousands, but that wasn't on his mind at the moment. His purpose for this scouting mission was to find resources for the massive army that was depending upon him. Up ahead was a massive structure, and the scout assumed it would hold everything he was sent out to find. Making his way through the jungle of tall grass, the scout reached the large structure and soon realized he may have difficulty getting inside - there were no openings to be seen! Thick, solid brick walls as far as he could see… Finally, he noticed what might be an opening. He headed that way to investigate and upon reaching the anomaly, he decided it just might be large enough to slip through. It was tight, and halfway through the slim opening, fear gripped the scout as he realized there was a very good chance of getting stuck. Still, he continued . . . struggling with every movement to gain so little in forward movement. When he saw the glimmer of light ahead, the scout felt relief flood through him. Hope turned into reality the moment he exited the tight flaw in the wall, and he entered a strange-looking abode. The bright light should have blinded him, since he was recently fighting his way through total darkness for what seemed like hours. However, for him . . . it was not a problem… Slowly, carefully making his way through the huge structure, the scout kept a keen eye out for any type of danger. He had no idea what to expect. He only knew he had to do his job . . . there was literally an army of his friends depending upon him. After countless hours of searching and trying to remain unseen, the scout finally found what he was after. It was actually a complete accident that he had stumbled across it. At first, all he saw was a strange-looking, round thing ahead. It was slightly wider at the top than it was at the bottom, and the scout knew it would challenge him just to climb to the top. He thought the elevated position would give him a better view of the structure though, so he made the decision to start climbing. It was like a rock, but extremely smooth. He almost lost his grip several times, however, experience and determination gave him the edge. After five minutes, the scout finally made it over the top. Tired, hungry and almost ready to return to his army, the scout remained on the rim of the object and looked around the vast structure. That's when he noticed that the object actually held some items. The were many times his size, round, black in color with a thick white line in the middle. Curious, the scout went to check them out. A quick bite told the scout he has reached a bonanza. Whatever these objects were . . . they were delicious! Sweet! Nourishing! Even as he recognized the wheat they were comprised of, the scout knew these would be enough to feed his army for years! Using his strong muscles, the scout broke off a piece of one of the gigantic items. The piece that had broken off was twice his own size, but he knew he was strong enough to carry the load back to his army of hungry friends… Within minutes, the scout was on his way back with his oversized load. He has no problems retracing his steps. Instinct has been his guide for as long as he could remember, and it had never let him down in the past. MOVEMENT!! Out of the corner of his eye, he suddenly saw something monstrous up ahead . . . and it was moving in his direction! Knowing movement would draw attention to his presence, the scout froze in place. Fear gripped the scout like a vice as the gigantic creature neared his position. He wanted to run, however, it knew that would be a mistake. It could even possibly mean his death. Movement was his enemy. Fear was his enemy. The scout knew this, and remained frozen . . . staring at the gigantic creature in fear. The scout was amazed at the creature's size. He estimated that the enormous creature has a body mass of millions . . . billions that of his own. As shock was about to overtake him, the scout watched the creature quickly move to where the scout had discovered his bounty. The creature moved one of his two enormous arms to the bounty, and retrieved one of the oval, sweet disks of wheat. Then, it one bite, the creature devoured the massive disk. A moment later, the scout's worse fears came true. The enormous creature had looked down, and noticed him!! Time seemed to slow down as the scout saw the creature reaching toward him. There was now darkness all around as the creature's massive bulk blocked out most of the light. Then, the giant's hand changed shape. One finger was coming closer and closer. It was shortly so close that it took up the scout's entire universe. The scout's last thought before the finger smashed him to pulp was that of disappointment. He knew his army of friends would never be able to taste the sweet disks made out of wheat. His efforts were wasted. His life had… Then . . . blackness. Nothing. The ant's life had been snuffed out.
